Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who benefits from my participation?
A.  All of us! The Wellwood WRW rolls out every October with a mandate to raise awareness of colorectal cancer and funds for Wellwood; an organization offering FREE supportive care for those living with a cancer diagnosis and their loved ones/caregivers. The added bonus is that you will get to experience the AMAZING feeling that comes with knowing you have helped others.
Q. I want to form a team or join a team. Why do I have to first register as an individual?
A. Thanks for asking. We are a charity, and so there are limits to our otherwise efficient registration website. You register first as an individual so that we can ensure that we have your information (and your payment), that we have the correct shirt size for you and that we have you entered in the correct event. You can then form a team of 2 or a team of 12 or more….or you can go it alone! It’s all up to you.
Q. What is the difference between registering as individuals or as a family?
A. We are all in favour of you defining who gets invited to your family reunion…but for the purposes of this event, a family is defined as two or more people paying their fees on one credit card. Kind of tugs at the heart strings, doesn’t it?
Q. I am a fulltime student.  Do I qualify for a student discount?
A. Not exactly… Instead this year we have offered a SUPER-EARLY-BIRD rate of $20 if you register before July 15and are 21 or under.
Q. Is this run timed?
A. Yes.  We use Chip Time Results and are a qualifying event for Road Warriors/Hamilton Harriers points.
Q. Are there age restrictions?
A. Nope. We have a 1K Kids’ run for participants up to age 12 and kids of all ages are welcome to enter any of our other events.  All children 12 and under participating in the 1K event receive a medal at the finish line and are encouraged to fundraise for great age-appropriate prizes. (C’mon, you budding philanthropists!)
Younger participants who feel ready for the big leagues may want to consider entering the 5K leisure walk category. These participants are called “Youth”. They get a technical shirt if registered before July 15, pay a bit less, are bibbed and chip timed. They are also eligible for prizes for fundraising results. So hit up your neighbours and co-workers for pledges. It doesn’t matter if you don’t finish the course. It doesn’t matter what kind of mobility aid you use. So long as you are not on a bike or on rollerblades we will treat you like a conquering hero.
Q. Are walkers welcome?
A. Yes! You will get a bib and a chip time like everyone else. If you want to take it easy, no problem, you can drop out after 1 or 2K.
Walkers will be guaranteed a shirt if registered before July 15, be bibbed and chip-timed, have their times posted but will not be awarded medals. Walkers will, of course, also be eligible for great prizes if they go out and get pledges.
Q. I plan on walking but sometimes I want to run…is that OK?
A.
We are SO glad you asked!  If you register as a walker, this is a TIMED category, and YOU MAY NOT RUN on the course, no matter how excited or enthusiastic you get when the crowds shout your name. You may combine walking and running in the 5K Run event and you have the option of dropping out at any point in the course if you feel you have done your bit.
Q. What do you mean by “Wheel”?
A. We love cyclists. We really do. However, at THIS event, “WHEEL” DOES NOT INCLUDE BIKES OR ROLLER BLADES. Instead, WHEEL refers to mobility aids like wheelchairs (racing styles, leisure styles, we love them all), scooters used for mobility assistance, walkers and strollers. The great part about this is that Wellwood’s Walk Run Wheel for Colorectal Cancer Awareness is accessible for people of all ages who get around in a variety of ways. It’s as simple as that.
Q. Strollers? Rollerblades? Bikes? Pets?
A.  Yes to strollers, no to the others.  Sorry, but for safety reasons, there are no roller blades, bikes or pets allowed on the course. Entrants pushing strollers should plan to line up near the rear of the starting area.
Q. Toilets. What if I have to go?
A.  Please go before going out on the course!  There are permanent fixtures available in the warm and welcoming world that is the McMaster University Student Centre, where our registration and awards ceremony takes place. You will also find additional washrooms on lower level of Gilmour Hall, accessed off the student centre.
Q. Do you have water stations?
A. Yes we do. We’ll keep you hydrated.
Q. I’ll be hungry. Can you help?
A. We’ve got you covered. Included in your registration fee is lots of FREE FOOD AND BEVERAGES. We will have fresh fruit, energy bars, a variety of drinks and LOTS OF PIZZA. All this and a free technical shirt. Such a deal!
Q. What is the course like?
A. This is a fast, mostly flat, course winding through the McMaster University Campus and lined by a beautiful canopy of autumn leaves. Imagine how great you will feel breathing in that fall air.
Q. I’m a slow mover. How much time am I allowed to complete my event?
A. The course closes after 90 minutes. Do not worry. You can do it, and we have marshals positioned throughout the course to help you out.
Q. I feel great about supporting Wellwood…but can I win any medals and prizes for my finishing time?
A. Every participant in the 12 and under kids’ event receives a medal at the finish line.
Every participant in the 12 and under kids’ event receives a medal at the finish line. No medals will be awarded for the 5K Walk.
If you are over 12, you will receive a medal if you are one of three fastest finishers overall in the 5K Run/Wheel and one of the three fastest runners in each age category of the 5K Run/Wheel and the 10K run. All top three finishers in each age category for each event, including the 5K walk will have their names called. Chip Time will be used to determine your time. Wellwood’s volunteer photographers will be on hand to help you brag to your network about your good work!
Prizes for fundraising will be awarded to the top ten Kids 12 and under, and the top ten youth + adults over 12 competing in any event, including individuals registered on teams.  The “Best Dressed” teams will have their pictures taken by our official photographer as our thanks for fundraising for Wellwood.
Q. What are the age groups for medals?
A. For the 5K Run/Wheel and 10K Run: Kids under 14 * Youth 15-18 * Adult 19-29 * Adult 30-39 * Adult 40-49 * Adult 50-59 * Adult 60-69 * Adult 70-79*, Adult 80+. For the 5K walk: no medals are awarded
Q. Can I cancel after registering if I am unable to attend the run?
A. We have good news and bad news. The bad news is that, as a small charity, we do not have the capacity to process refunds. The good news is that, if you cannot attend, you can feel GREAT knowing that your registration fee goes STRAIGHT TO WELLWOOD and will help families who are coping with a cancer diagnosis.
Q. Can a registration be transferred to someone else?
A. We have good news and bad news. The bad news is that, as a small charity, we do not have the capacity to transfer registrations. The good news is that, if you cannot attend, you can feel GREAT knowing that your registration fee goes STRAIGHT TO WELLWOOD and will help families who are coping with a cancer diagnosis.
Q. Where will shirt + bib pickup be?
A. Wellwood Juravinski House. 501 Sanatorium Rd. See registration page for directions.
Friday, October 13, 12noon - 4:00 pm
Saturday, October 14, 10:00am - 4:00 pm
Race Day Sunday, October 15, 7:30 am to 8:45 am
at McMaster University STUDENT CENTRE.
Registration closes at 8:45 am on October 15.
Q. Will someone else be able to pick up my shirt + bib?
A. Yes. Whether or not you are on a team, your friends or family can pick up for you. We just ask that they bring a list of names. In order to speed up our process we will not have shirts + bibs prepared in advance by team name. Kits will include bibs (with pins), your beautiful 2017 Wellwood Walk Run Wheel long-sleeved technical running shirt and our best wishes.
Q. I like to be wired. What is your headphone policy?
A. So that you can fully enjoy the cheers of other athletes and spectators (and hear the directions being given enroute by the race marshals) we strongly recommend that you leave your in-ear music at home during this event.
Q. Where will the race results be posted?
A. On race day, the results are posted at the finish line by the ChipTime Results truck.  This year’s results will be posted on our registration page within 24 hours after the race. Check out the page now for previous years’ results.
Q. How about elite runners?
A. Like we’ve been saying….we welcome all abilities. Elite runners can finish fast, grab a slice of pizza, and cheer the efforts of the later finishers.  We have a measured course, use Chip Time Results and are a qualifying event for Road Warriors/Hamilton Harriers points.
Q. Do you have parking available for my cheering section?
A.  Not only do we have oodles of parking, but it is usually FREE (courtesy of McMaster – we will know for sure closer to race day) and conveniently located in front of the McMaster University Student Centre where our registration and awards take place. See the map on the registration page for details.
Q. Can the course accommodate my cheering section?
A. There is plenty of room to line the entire course with your entourage…or if you prefer, they can cheer your arrival across the finish line. This is a very friendly course for spectators.
Q. Do you have a course map?
A. We do. Check out our registration page.
